Security and Privacy Evaluation of IP Cameras on Shodan
This research investigates the security and privacy risks associated with UK-based IP cameras accessible on Shodan. Analysis of 281 cameras revealed significant vulnerabilities, including insecure connections and exposed footage, putting residential areas at risk. Shodan’s role in exacerbating these vulnerabilities by making cameras easily discoverable is a critical concern. The study also examines the potential misuse of captured footage by AI tools, highlighting further threats to privacy. The research calls for stronger security measures from users, manufacturers and regulators, and advocates for encryption, security by design and uniform global IoT standards. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on IoT security, informing policymaking to prevent large-scale cyberattacks and providing critical insights to protect user privacy.
